Understanding Emotional Concepts in Early Childhood Care: A Training Session with Rachel Tainsh

On Tuesday, 4th March, Rachel Tainsh, TWC Honorary Training Advisor, delivered a session about emotion regulation to the CII participants. The focus was on how to support parents of children with disabilities. With a background in child development and disability Rachel has worked internationally in a number of different contexts and is passionate about infant mental health and family support.

The session focused on the work of Paul Gilbert and the 3 components of emotion regulation – Drive, Threat, and Soothing. These concepts are helpful to support parents think about the importance of boosting their own soothing system so they can better attend to the needs of their child. Being able to notice which when we feel stressed anxious or lacking in motivation is helpful for everyone and ADAPT staff and students all benefited from the session.
