From July 4th to 7th 2024, I (Atu) had the opportunity to visit Scotland at the invitation of Rachel Tainsh, the Honorary Training Advisor for the CII.

During my trip, Rachel connected me to a centre dedicated to supporting children on the autism spectrum and I observed their unique Lego play scheme. This experience was highly educational and offered a new perspective compared to our usual practices in India. At this centre, children with autism are encouraged to build and discuss their own Lego creations, which, according to the staff, significantly enhances their confidence. Notably, the teachers adopt a non-intrusive approach, allowing children to communicate at their own pace without pressure. This visit was a transformative experience. Observing the Lego play scheme and the non-intrusive approach used with children on the autism spectrum offered new perspectives that we can adapt to our programs in India. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best support we can provide is by creating a space for individuals to express themselves freely.

In addition to this visit, we held a productive meeting to brainstorm and develop new tools for the CII Course and discussed the hub project in detail.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ninian Perry with Rachel, where we explored the possibility of him visiting India to share his insights and expertise.

On a personal note, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Rachel and her family. I climbed the Conic Hill and had the privilege of decorating Bella the Beithir’s scale, a piece designed by Rachel’s sister, with two personalized buttons generously provided by the team.
